Arthritis, Tendinitis, and Joint Pain

Arthritis, Tendinitis, and Joint Pain

Arthritis is one of the most common diseases in the United States. An estimated 50 million adults in the United States reported being told by a doctor that they have some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia. By 2030, an estimated 67 million Americans ages 18 years or older are projected to have doctor-diagnosed arthritis. (Source: CDC)

Arthritis literally means joint inflammation. The term arthritis describes more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that affect joints, the tissues surrounding the joint and other connective tissue. The location, pattern, and severity of symptoms can vary depending on the specific form of the disease. Arthritis is typically characterized by stiffness and pain in and around one or more joints. Symptoms can develop suddenly or gradually. Certain arthritic conditions can also involve the immune system and a variety of internal organs inside the body.

Arthritis, Tendinitis, and Joint Pain

Tendinitis is inflammation, irritation, and swelling of a tendon, which is the fibrous structure that joins muscle to bone. In many cases, tendinosis (tendon degeneration) is also present. Tendinitis can occur in any tendon, but some commonly affected sites include the elbow, heel (Achilles tendinitis), shoulder, and wrist. Symptoms include pain and tenderness along a tendon, pain at night, and pain that is worse with movement or activity. The goal of acupuncture treatment is to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

Joint pain refers to any non-arthritic pain in the joints. Joint pain can affect one or more joints. Our acupuncturists can help determine the severity of your joint condition and create a custom treatment for your particular condition.

There are several factors that can contribute to arthritis, tendinitis, and joint pain. Causes of arthritis, tendinitis, and joint pain include trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age. We consult with you to identify the root factors specific to your condition and formulate a custom, and holistic, treatment plan that targets the roots of your arthritis, tendinitis, or joint pain, not just the symptoms.
